I am an abstract mixed media artist living in Houston, Texas. Originally from Scotland, I have always been a maker, experimenting with many mediums and crafts over the years. After a career in oil and gas, I returned to full time painting, attending the Art League and Glassell School studio classes and currently part of the BLOCK XXV advanced study class. My work is mainly abstract with unique embroidery and mixed media elements.
With my geological background, I draw influence from the landscapes around me both here at home and traveling around the world, paying particular attention to the natural formations, textures and light in the landscape.
As an abstract painter, I also incorporate clay, stitching and various fabrics to bring new visual elements and texture to my work. The work aims to push the concept of a frame of viewing, either by playing with the shape or purpose of the frame or changing the boundaries with sculptural shape, depth and texture. In my current works, exposed wooden or ceramic frames and glazes incorporate the landscape directly into the work, whilst creating the window or frame into the abstracted landscape for the viewer.
