I create intuitive, abstract paintings and sculptures, incorporating textile and ceramic elements. The work echos geological maps, structures and layering that I studied as a geologist and evoke my memories and emotions of landscapes, particularly those of my native Scotland. I fragment together painted shapes, held with stitching, along with collaged textiles. Ceramic elements takes the earth directly into the work, grounding the shapes and collages back to the landscape. My work continues to push the concept of a frame of viewing, either by playing with the shape or purpose of the frame, changing the boundaries out with the traditional rectangle, using sculptural shape, depth and texture. These windows or frames, create an abstracted landscape for the viewer. We don't see our memories as a square, its a piece of memory, a fragment in time, just part of bigger memories or a bigger landscape. The works are those fragmented moments in time that remind me of where I have come from, where I have been and my life now.
