I create abstract painting and sculptures, incorporating textile and ceramic elements that evoke my memories and emotions of the landscapes of my homeland of Scotland and my travels. The work echos geological maps, structures and stratigraphy that i studied as a geologist. I fragment together painted shapes, held with stitching, along with collaged textiles which have a soft moment like the slow movement of the earth. Ceramic elements takes the earth directly into the work, grounding the shapes and collages back to my landscape memories.
The Canvas based work aims to push the concept of a frame of viewing, either by playing with the shape or purpose of the frame or changing the boundaries with sculptural shape, depth and texture. In my current works, exposed wooden or ceramic frames and glazes incorporate the landscape directly into the work, whilst creating the window or frame into the abstracted landscape for the viewer.
